Several webmasters have noticed a "Change ads to..." and a list of other links at the side or bottom of their AdSense ads. Infact I just found one of my ads with a text box and submit button inside of it so you can type for the ads you want to see! Wow. Even better, you will be shown related key phrases and words and their daily search count.

Link: http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

Good Keywords - Downloadable .exe

Good Keywords is free Windows software which aims to find the perfect set of keywords for you and your website. It is just a 500KB download and completely safe to download and use. This is a very useful tool which can save you a lot of research time.

As well as keyword research, this tool will also show you your site popularity (using Alexa) and your link popularity - the number of websites that link to yours.

Link: http://www.goodkeywords.com

Google Trends

Straight out of Google Labs, this Google Trends tool is still in development. However it is still provides exciting results for analysing how search terms have fluctuated in popularity over time. Therefore you will be able to note which keywords are in decline and which are experiencing good growth with Google's search engine.

Google Trends also enables you to graphically compare search terms on the same image. For some terms you are also shown Google news items which involve the keywords entered over the period shown.

Due to this tool still being in development, you may find that many of the niche terms, which are relatively unpopular, do not provide results when entered in the 'Search Trends' box. Instead you will get "Your terms - keywords - do not have enough search volume to show graphs."
Google Trends does not provide you with actual search figures for your terms either - just a relative fluctuation.

Link: http://www.google.com/trends

Niche Watch - Keyword Competition Checker

"Find exactly which competitors are there for your niche keywords and gain better search engine placement by targeting the technical aspects."

Type in a keyword or phrase and you will be shown the top 20 websites, or competition, for that search term.

Link: http://www.nichewatch.com

Overture Keyword Selector Tool

Enter a search term of keyword into the input box and this page will generate suggestions related to your keyword query along with an estimation of the number of searches conducted for each term last month. This tool was actually developed to help advertisers recognize popular keywords for their marketing.

Other useful tools
eBay Keywords - Popular keywords used on eBay in alphabetical order.
SEOchat - Keyword Difficulty Check (How hard will it be to rank well with a keyword?)
SEOchat - Keyword Suggestions

Popular Search Tools

Google Zeitgeist: Search patterns, trends, and surprises

Weekly list of the top 15 gaining search queries from Google.

Pulling together interesting search trends and patterns requires Google's human and computing power together. Search statistics are automatically generated based on the millions of searches conducted on Google over a given period of time - weekly, monthly, and annually. With some help from humans, and a pigeon or two when they have time, these statistics and trends make their way from the depths of Google's hard drives to become the Google Zeitgeist report.

We should note that in compiling the Zeitgeist, no individual searcher's information is available or accessible to us. What you see here is a cumulative snapshot of interesting queries people are asking – some over time, some within country domains, and some on Google.com – that perhaps reveal a bit of the human condition. We appreciate the contribution all Google users make to these fascinating bits of information.

Link: http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html

AOL Hot Searches

Daily top 20 searches conducted on the AOL websearch engine.
